William Byrd

The Great Service

Wednesday, June 13th 2012 at 7.30pm

The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth

To mark the release of their Chandos recording of Byrdís Great Service, Musica Contexta and members of the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble present a programme of the composerís finest settings of English words.

Aside from sections of the Great Service and anthems such as 'Sing Joyfully' and 'O Lord make thy servant Elizabeth', this includes private devotional music from Byrdís collections such as the Songs of Sundrie Natures. Also included is a homage to Byrd by his greatest pupil Ė Thomas Tomkins Ė whose own 'Great' Service is modeled on Byrdís.
